Applying Almond Oil for Hair Properly: Instructions, Recipes and Tips

Aromatherapy and essential oils

Almond oil is famous for its benefits for hair: it strengthens, protects from hair loss, nourishes, and moisturizes. However, its use has some nuances, as is the case with any other cosmetic product. It is necessary to choose the right oil, apply it taking into account the recommended duration and frequency, follow the dosage when preparing masks, performing aromatherapy or massage. Knowing all the subtleties will help you correctly carry out the procedure to improve the condition of the hair structure.

Features of almond oil

To make the product, both sweet and bitter almond kernels are used, which are processed by cold pressing. However, there is a big difference between these products: from the first grade, a base oil is obtained, which is widely used in cosmetology, and from the second, essential oil, which has a limited scope of use. Therefore, for hair care, buy only oil made from sweet almonds.

Bitter almond oil
The use of bitter almond essential oil is limited due to its toxicity

The bitter almond product is highly toxic and is contraindicated for use during pregnancy. It is not used externally in undiluted form - only by mixing with base products and in minimal doses.

Oil produced from sweet almonds has the following features:

  • can be used almost without restrictions;
  • safe for external use without adding other ingredients;
  • absorbs well;
  • has a wide range of beneficial properties;
  • quickly dissolves essential oils.

The natural product has a pale yellow tint and a barely noticeable aroma. When choosing oil, make sure that there is no sediment at the bottom of the jar.

Benefits of almond oil for scalp and hair

Sweet almond oil contains a large number of healing components that allow you to cope with various deficiencies of the scalp and hair. The following elements have the most pronounced effect:

  • organic acids that restore damaged hair and enhance cell regeneration;
  • protein substances that add shine and silkiness;
  • fatty acids that improve root nutrition;
  • niacin, which strengthens the roots and normalizes the functioning of the sebaceous glands;
  • folic acid, which protects hair and skin from external factors;
  • carotene, which has a moisturizing effect;
  • tocopherol, which enhances metabolic processes in cells;
  • squalene, which softens hair and gives it elasticity.

The combination of these components makes almond oil a universal remedy, since it can be used regardless of hair characteristics. The product is equally suitable for oily, brittle, damaged, colored curls and will help achieve the following results:

  • improve the condition of the ends;
  • prevent loss;
  • activate follicles;
  • eliminate fat without overdrying;
  • give your curls silkiness and smoothness.

Many note that the effect after using the product is comparable to salon lamination - the shine and softness of the hair increases several times. They are easier to comb and become stronger.

The product has an equally important effect on the scalp, solving the following problems:

  • excessive fat content;
  • dandruff and seborrhea;
  • dryness and flaking;
  • inflammatory manifestations;
  • irritation and itching.

Since the health of the hair directly depends on the condition of the scalp, each time you use oil, it is important to thoroughly rub the product into the root area, performing a gentle massage. This will not only enhance the penetration of beneficial substances into the skin, but also activate metabolic processes to accelerate hair growth.

Methods of Use

The oil is applied separately when performing massage and aromatherapy, as well as as part of masks that enhance the effect of the procedure. In addition, you can add it to shampoo if the product does not contain almond oil as an ingredient.

The product is prohibited for use only in case of individual intolerance. Before distributing the product throughout your scalp and hair, you need to test your reaction to its components by applying a couple of drops to a small area behind the ear. If there are no unusual symptoms, such as rash, redness or itching, within 24 hours, you can use the composition.

There are restrictions on the frequency of oil use. Any application of the product in pure or mixed form should be carried out no more than 2 times a week. In this case, the duration of one course should not exceed 1,5–2 months. After a break of 2 months, you can return to using the product again.

In its purest form: massage and aroma combing

Perhaps a massage with aroma brushing gives the best results. The procedure can be performed either separately with the application of almond oil only, or when using it in masks. When the composition is rubbed into the skin, follicles and cells are actively saturated with healing components, and blood flow also increases, which has a positive effect on strengthening the roots.

Perform a scalp massage with oil as follows:

  1. Pre-comb dry strands to make the procedure easier.
  2. Pour almond oil (1-2 tablespoons is enough, depending on the length of your hair) into a small container and heat in a water bath until warm.
  3. Make a parting and apply the product to the skin using a hairdressing brush.
  4. Step back 1,5 cm from the first parting and make the next one, parting the hairline to distribute the oil over the new area.
  5. Continue applying the mixture until you have treated the entire surface of your head.
  6. Massage the skin, gently rubbing the oil in circular motions for 7-10 minutes.
  7. Lay your hair back and comb it along the entire length with a wooden comb to better distribute the oil.
  8. Check that the ends are well treated with the product.
  9. Make a bun and use a plastic cap, and cover your hair with a warm towel on top.
  10. Wait about 1 hour and wash off the product with shampoo. If the oil is not completely removed the first time, rinse your hair again.

These instructions can be followed when applying the mask if the recipe does not require distributing the mixture only to the ends. For dry hair, it is recommended to use the product on clean hair, and for oily hair, 1-2 hours before rinsing.

Use in masks

Almond oil is used as a base product in the preparation of various masks. Depending on the result that a particular mask is aimed at, the product is mixed with other base and essential oils. To enhance the effect, other useful ingredients are also added, for example, mustard or cognac, which help warm the skin and stimulate hair growth.

When preparing the mixture, remember that the base oils used in the mask (almond, burdock, coconut, castor, argan) must be preheated using a water bath. In this case, the temperature of the composition should not be higher than 37 degrees to avoid burns. If you use yolk as part of a mask, it is enough to warm the base products to 30 degrees. Before use, check that the temperature of the mixture on your wrist is comfortable.

For optimal effect, you need to put a plastic cap on the treated hair and wrap your head in a towel.

Adding to shampoo

If you don’t have time to keep the oil on your hair for a long time, you can use it while washing your hair. This will better clean the surface of the head, as well as strengthen the hair and make it silkier. With regular use, many notice that hair begins to fall out less frequently.

You can add oil to your hair cleanser according to the following instructions:

  1. Pour 10 drops of oil into 5 ml of natural shampoo.
  2. Lather the mixture vigorously in your palms to distribute the oil evenly.
  3. Apply to skin and strands with a light massage for 10 minutes.
  4. Rinse off the product with warm water and a new portion of shampoo without adding oil.

The procedure of washing your hair with shampoo and oil should not be performed every day - 2 times a week is enough.

Recommendations for using almond oil

The choice of how to use almond oil depends on your goal:

  • to strengthen the roots and prevent hair loss, apply oil or the prepared mixture to the root area, performing a 10-minute massage;
  • To eliminate split ends, treat only the ends with the product;
  • To restore shine and softness to your hair, distribute the oil or the appropriate mixture over all strands.

Of course, using oil in the form of adding it to masks or as an independent product gives a more pronounced result than using it when washing your hair, due to the duration of the effect. By the way, the oil can be kept on the hair overnight, especially when treating damaged and weakened hair, but not longer than 8 hours. In this case, you should refrain from a lengthy procedure the first time you use the product. First, make sure that you are comfortable keeping the oil on your hair for 1 hour without any signs of burning or any other unpleasant sensations.

You may have sensitive skin - in this case, leaving the product on overnight is not recommended.

If you use almond oil as part of masks containing aggressive ingredients, such as cinnamon, mustard, alcohol or lemon concentrate, then leave the mixture on your hair for no more than 40 minutes.

Reviews on the use of almond oil for hair

I’ve been using it for six months now, I make a hair mask once a week, but I add a few drops of pine or fir oil to the almond oil. I warm it under hot water, then on the roots of the hair, a small massage of the head, under the bag and hat. I walk for 2-3 hours and wash it off. I stopped hair loss. I recommend it.

I tried almond mixed with burdock. I also sometimes added olive oil, wheat germ and rose hips. Most of all I liked the mixture of burdock and rosehip. There is no particular hair growth from anything, but this mixture is the best at restoring my dry hair.

I mix vodka and almond oil, add essential oils (ylang-ylang, cinnamon), heat it up a little and apply it to my hair for about an hour. It is better to wrap it in plastic and a towel. Then wash as usual and dry. The hair is wonderful afterwards - manageable, shiny and smells wonderful!

The first time I applied it cold, I didn’t notice any effect. The only thing is that they get dirty faster. And yesterday I heated a bottle of almond oil in a pan of hot water, applied it for an hour and a half, washed it off with shampoo and... My hair was gorgeous!!! They looked healthy, alive and shiny. I didn't expect it, I was surprised. It's the second day. I haven’t had time to notice yet whether they got dirty as quickly as last time or not...

My first experience with natural hair cosmetics was unsuccessful: I smeared them with egg, and mayonnaise, and brown sugar, I used natural shampoos - everything turned out to be nonsense, my hair looked like a washcloth. Then I decided that since hair is dead cells, it makes no sense to nourish it, you can only grow healthy ones or “repair” them with the help of silicones. In general, I returned to chemistry. I have always been proud of my hair - it is very thick and wavy. Once upon a time I wanted to give my dark brown hair a chocolate tint - in general, I ruined my hair. They began to fluff randomly, become hard, and now they are falling out from stress. But one day I accidentally came across a post by a girl who is interested in oils for hair treatment, looked at her “before” and “after” photos, and decided, “I want that too.” At the pharmacy, the first thing she recommended was almond oil, so I bought it. I added it to the balm according to instructions 1:5, dried my hair, went to the mirror - it was WOW! My hair became like in childhood - instead of random curling, it formed into neat, beautiful curls, was soft, voluminous and very shiny. They weren’t like this even after salon lamination! I don’t know how it works, but now I will always use such a miracle.

I’ll tell you how I cured my hair with the help of this oil, and most importantly, grew it. Once a week (sometimes twice) I made this mask: half a spoon of almond plus the same amount of burdock (it heals the scalp), I heat it up quite a bit. Do not overdo it with volume, your hair will become difficult to rinse. I apply it to the roots with a sponge and distribute it along the length, then I walk around in a cap or towel for an hour and a half. I wash it off with shampoo (any kind) with lemon juice added so that my hair does not remain greasy. After the second use, my hair became smooth and soft, the ends became much better. The most important thing is that my hair began to grow much faster and much healthier. I recommend it to everyone! No salon will help you better than yourself!

For hair care, use sweet, not bitter, almond base oil. It has a complex of healing components that help cope with the problems of hair loss and brittleness, making it strong, elastic and shiny. The product is no less beneficial for the scalp: it eliminates dandruff, excess oiliness and irritation. The most effective option is massaging the scalp and aroma-combing with this oil, as well as adding it to masks. Before use, you must make sure that there is no individual intolerance to the product.
