Blue diamond tops Christie's Magnificent Jewels auction in New York

Auction house Christie's December 6 held a New York auction at Rockefeller Plaza. The public was offered rare diamonds with high jewelry and investment potential in various cuts and colors. Total sales of Christie's Magnificent Jewels were $58. The cost of the main lot - a blue diamond - reached $772 million.

At 31,62 carats, the flawless blue diamond is the largest stone of its color ever to be auctioned. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has defined the color of the diamond as Fancy Blue, clarity - VVS1. The rare pear-shaped crystal is framed with pink diamonds and set in a platinum and rose gold pendant. The reverse side of the stone is adorned with a pattern of white and pink round-cut diamonds.

86,64 carat pear-shaped diamond pendant necklace

In second place was a magnificent diamond necklace-pendant. The pendant contains a pear-shaped diamond weighing 86,64 carats of excellent polishing and symmetry, color D and clear VVS1. The unique stone is classified as a rare type IIa - without impurities of nitrogen or boron. The platinum and white gold setting is set with 78 pear-cut diamonds ranging from 2,50 to 0,50 carats. Auction house Christie's sold this piece for $5.

Other notable items include a 107,46 carat VS2-clarity 18-ct VS2 square Fancy Yellow round-cut square diamond brooch by Graff Jewelry. The GIA has defined the color as Fancy Yellow. The amazing stone is set in 580k white and yellow gold, set with an abstract motif of round and baguette-cut diamonds. The diamond brooch sold for $000.
