Ferronniere as a replacement for a wedding crown or diadem

The feronière is a headpiece that was very popular in the first half of the 19th century. Feronniere - a hoop or chain with a pearl or precious stone pendant descending to the middle of the forehead.

At the beginning of the 19th century, this women's accessory became so fashionable that it became a necessity. However, it should be noted that the beauties could use the feronniere only at the ball. There is such a picture by A. Bryullov - Portrait of N. Pushkina. This portrait depicts the beautiful Natalie, somewhat tired after the ball.

And if you look into the distant past of headdresses, you can see them in different versions and in different folk costumes. The feronniere we are talking about now is closest to the feronnieres of the Renaissance. This is confirmed by the paintings of artists, for example, the painting by Leonardo da Vinci - "Portrait of a Young Woman" (it also has another name - "Beautiful Ferroniera" -La belle Ferroniere), or "Portrait of Elisabeth Gonzaga" by Raphael.

Feronière decoration story

At the beginning of the 19th century the feronniere is back in fashion, and its name is inextricably linked with the old portrait of Leonardo, very popular at that time. And a portrait of beauties of the 19th century with feronnieres can be found in almost every museum.

And so, the feronniere was considered a special decoration. Sometimes she fell into the number of numerous decorations that were part of a large parure. The pendant could be a precious stone, a pearl, a golden star, a small rosette of several stones. Feronnieres with a drop of pearls of a rare shape and color were especially valued. The jewel was attached to a gold chain or hoop, the ends of which were hidden in the hair.

Noble ladies wore this jewelry only on special occasions - at a ball or social events. But, as always, there were those who, claiming their involvement in high society, put on a feronniere in the most inopportune situation. Naturally, such unlucky beauties became the subject of ridicule from others.

The feronières quickly went out of fashion, they were forgotten already in the middle of the 19th century. By the way, a beautiful precious earring of a suitable shape could be attached to the ribbon.

Today, the feronniere can be found as a bride's wedding decoration, it looks especially attractive on boho-style brides.
