Symbols of love: heart jewelry

Jewelery and bijouterie

On Valentine's Day, it is customary to give different gifts in the form of hearts. This form has long been recognized throughout the world as a symbol of love: it is understandable to every person, regardless of his age and place of residence.

Why heart?

There are many versions of the appearance of this symbol! Some believe that the iconic pictogram originates from the shape of ivy leaves: this is what the leaves of this plant look like, which in ancient Greece was considered a symbol of the god of winemaking and the passion of Dionysus. Others argue that the heart appeared due to similar outlines of some parts of the human body, directly related to passion, love and childbirth. Perhaps the most unusual theory of the origin of this symbol relates to sylphia, a giant dill, the seeds of which were used in ancient times as a food flavoring and medicine.

While all of these theories may well be real, the true origins of the heart shape may be far more commonplace. Scientist Pierre Vinken and art historian Martin Kemp argued that the symbol originated in the writings of the Roman physician, surgeon, philosopher Galen and the famous philosopher Aristotle, who described the human heart as "having three chambers with a small dent in the middle."

According to this theory, the shape of the heart may have appeared when artists and scientists from the Middle Ages tried to depict the heart according to the descriptions of ancient medical texts. For example, in the XNUMXth century, the Italian physicist Guido da Vigevano made a series of anatomical drawings with a heart that closely resembles the one described by Aristotle. Since the human heart has long been associated with emotions and pleasure, this form dates back to the Middle Ages as a symbol of romance and love.

history of the holiday

In the late Middle Ages in France and England, the life of St. Valentine gradually began to acquire legends associated with the secret wedding of couples in love. At that time, the cruel Roman emperor Claudius II believed that a single man was the best warrior, so he forbade men to marry, and women - to marry. It was then that Valentine came to the aid of the lovers, who at first was an ordinary doctor and priest. He secretly sanctified the marriage of loving couples from everyone.

Soon the authorities learned about his activities and imprisoned him and sentenced him to death. There Saint Valentine met the beautiful daughter of the overseer, Julia. Before his death, the enamored priest wrote his beloved girl a declaration of love - a valentine, where he spoke about his love, and signed it "Your Valentine". It was read after he was executed, and the execution itself took place on February 14, 269.

Be that as it may, the heart to this day is considered a symbol of love and Valentine's Day. Therefore, on this holiday, it is customary to give not only valentine cards, but also gifts in the form of hearts.
