Jack Sparrow's Choice: Johnny Depp's Favorite Watches and Jewelry

Jewelery and bijouterie

June 9 is the birthday of one of the most popular actors in the world - Johnny Depp. Despite the large number of roles in intellectual films, many associate him with Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean epic. In a frankly entertaining franchise, Depp managed to create an unexpectedly deep tragicomic image. Perhaps because Johnny and his hero have a lot in common - for example, a love of jewelry. Like the fictitious pirate, the real Depp loves beaded bracelets, bandanas wrapped around his wrist, talismans and amulets around his neck.

The most noticeable and, perhaps, the most masculine item from Depp's jewelry and bijouterie arsenal is a wide leather wristband with two buckles, which he wears on his right wrist from a young age. So, the wristband can be seen in the photo of the actor in 1989.

At the dawn of his career, Johnny got into the habit of wearing two pairs of watches on his left wrist, complementing them with bracelets, beaded things, bands of colored scarves. He loves a variety of watches: for example, the quadrangular Cartier Tank American Dual-Time

The actor complements with a wide silver Mexican bracelet with traditional Indian ornament, a bandana and a leather cord bracelet with an engraved silver plate, and the classic round Ballon Bleu de Cartier with a multi-link bracelet with natural turquoise and Buddhist rosary bracelets.

Next to the bracelets, Johnny has been wearing silver rings with a stylized image of a human skull for many years.

This catchy and a little frightening thing has quite deep historical roots. The skull, for obvious reasons, has a symbolic meaning in many religious cults, in Christianity it is a symbol of Adam - the first man created by God. Skull rings were worn by Freemasons and romantic youths, and in Victorian times, jewelry with this motif was supposed to remind of the frailty of existence. In Mexico, where Johnny likes to visit, the skull is a symbol of the holiday, the Day of the Dead.

This ring can be clearly seen in black-and-white photographs of 1998 by photographer Michel Huddy: Depp posed for Premiere Magazine almost without decorations, only with a skull on his finger and in an extremely exotic for Hollywood Russian command watch of the Vostok brand. Johnny has also been spotted with another version of the skull: he adorned the Corum Bubble XL Automatic Privateer Pirate watch, which was born in the wake of the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and, of course, ended up on the wrist of the lead actor. No wonder: in the XVII-XVIII centuries, the skull flaunted on the pirate black flag - the Jolly Roger.

Like a true pirate, Depp also wears earrings in both ears - thin silver congo rings.

But most of all, Johnny has beads, pendants, amulets and talismans.

The actor wears on chains a small female ring, an image of Buddha, a cowrie shell, a silver coin, a cross, a Hindu elephant - all together or in arbitrary combinations, according to mood. He also has carnelian beads, probably from Mexico: among the descendants of the indigenous population of Central America, this is a rather popular little thing.

The most unexpected of the actor's pendants is a pendant with a portrait of Che Guevara and with a tiger's tooth (at the same time, a pendant with a tiger's eye cabochon flaunts next to it). Well, and a pendant engraved with Gonzo (“crazy, crazy, gone”).

The actor demonstrated all his jewelry in a commercial for the Dior Sauvage fragrance, in which he starred in 2015. According to the script of the video, a rock musician (Depp) runs from a big city to the desert and there "buries" chains and bracelets in the sand, as if breaking ties with a past life.

However, it is hard to believe in such an impulse. If you know the biography of an actor rich in escapades, who in his youth began his career with performances in violent clubs with a third-rate rock band, then perhaps there is nothing unexpected in his Gonzo pendant. He just proves that, despite his 56 years, in the soul of Johnny is still the same rebellious teenager that he was forty years ago.
