Now in gold: CASIO G-SHOCK GM-6900G-9ER watch review

Wrist Watch

As you know, "indestructible" Casio G-SHOCK watches were originally produced in plastic. This went on for many years, the watches became incredibly popular, literally conquered the whole world, gaining a huge army of fans who call themselves shokans, and their favorite watches - "rubber". Sometimes the company made metal inserts in polymer cases. And at one fine moment I tried to release G-SHOCK in a completely metal case. The experiment was a success: the Shokans accepted the innovation with a bang, despite the somewhat higher price of the watch in the steel case. Moreover, Casio, following its unchanged business strategy, soon managed to bring prices for such models to a more than acceptable level, about $ 200 plus or minus.

In line with this policy, more and more re-editions of the iconic G-SHOCK models began to appear - now in metal. One of such re-editions was the GM-6900 watch, released in early 2020 and going back to the legendary DW-6900. At the same time, the 25th anniversary of the DW-6900 was celebrated in this way - they first saw the light of day in 1995.

Golden shine

The GM-6900 line includes several versions made in various colors. The GM-6900G-9ER model looks truly brilliant (in the truest sense of the word), in steel with gold IP-coating. The radiance of the body, plus the same color LED display with contrasting black accents, plus the overall design, including the Shokan-loved Triple Graph - the so-called "three eyes" - all this makes a fantastic impression, recalling the image of the C-3PRO droid from Star Wars.

Case, strap

Of course, the GM-6900G-9ER retains all the inherent resistance of the G-SHOCK to shock loads, vibrations, centrifugal forces, etc. True, you have to pay something for beauty: naturally, the gold coating can be scratched inadvertently, and scratches on it will look sadder than on plastic ... But nothing can be done - dialectics, and beauty is worth it!

In all other respects, as it was said, "indestructibility" is at the standard (highest) level of G-SHOCK. This includes the 200-meter water resistance of the case. The dimensions of the latter can also be called familiar: width 49,7 mm, from lugs to lugs 53,9 mm, thickness 18,6 mm.

Someone may express doubts about the strap: it is ordinary - black plastic, while a bracelet made of the same steel with gold IP-plating seems to be asking for. Or, something fabric, but also gold. Or at least plastic, but in gold tones. On the other hand, the contrast of gold and black in the GM-6900G-9ER is quite appropriate.

In addition, there is no doubt that the brand will release many more versions of the GM-6900G - perhaps some of them will be equipped with a gold-plated steel bracelet. You just need to be prepared for the fact that this will lead to an increase in the weight of the watch. The current version of the GM-6900G-9ER weighs 96 g, i.e. it is slightly heavier than the DW-6900, but remains quite acceptable in this respect.

Display, functions

The operation of GM-6900G-9ER is controlled by an electronic module Casio 3230. This is an Old School solution, there are no such innovations of recent years as a solar battery or Bluetooth-synchronization with a smartphone. Perhaps these additions are still ahead (Casio never stops!), But in this case Old School is probably a conceptual sign, since - remember - this is the reissue of the incredibly popular watch from the glorious history of G-SHOCK.

A CR3230 battery is responsible for supplying the 2016 module with energy, a full charge of which lasts two years.

Speaking about the display, we note once again, firstly, the extremely successful counterpoint of gold and black, and secondly, the iconic “three eyes”, so beloved by the Shokans in the historical prototype DW-6900. These eyes are by no means only decorative: they are functional, the current seconds and fractions of seconds are counted in them.

The rest of the functionality is also classic: current time in 12- and 24-hour format (optional), automatic calendar (date, day of the week, month), which does not require adjustment until 2100, split-chronograph, stopwatch with an accuracy of 0,01 sec. ... during the first hour and 1 sec. over the next 23 hours, countdown timer (from 1 min. to 24 hours), alarm clock with multiple signal options.

It is also worth noting the electroluminescent backlight, which, perfectly fulfilling its purpose, gives the watch a somewhat mystical shade in the dark.

Conclusion

The Casio G-SHOCK GM-6900G-9ER watch is an excellent choice for active men who keep up with the times and at the same time prefer not to look “like everyone else”.
