New Suunto watches: your trusted partner in sports

Wrist Watch

Start a new life every Monday: make a promise to yourself to eat right and exercise regularly. Sound familiar? We understand very much! But we know a way how to still hold out longer than until the evening of the same day. It is important to choose the right partner in this difficult endeavor, which will help to adhere to the regime. After all, the most important thing in any business is regularity!

Meet Suunto watches!

Today the Finnish company Suunto is a recognized world leader in the production of sports watches. The company will soon be 90 years old, so its age is also respectable! True, for the first six decades, Suunto products were not watches at all, but compasses: the founder of the brand Tuomas Vohlonen in 1933 invented a method of making a compass, the body of which is filled with a viscous liquid. This ensured the stability of the pointer, its protection against impact and wear in extreme conditions, a new level of accuracy and ease of reading. The name itself is not accidental: the Finnish word “suunta” (pronounced “sunn-to”) means azimuth, course, direction.

At first, they made compasses for the military, after World War II they switched to "peaceful tracks". It wasn't until the very end of the twentieth century that the Suunto Spyder, the world's first wristwatch-format dive computer, and the Suunto Vector, the first wristwatch-format computer for outdoor training with an altimeter, appeared. And it went, and by leaps and bounds.

Generally speaking, it is not entirely correct to call Suunto products watches. They are actually multifunctional wrist devices; they include, of course, a watch with a full range of possibilities - the current time and its segments (i.e. chronographs), calendars, additional time zones, alarms ... but beyond that there is still a lot, a lot of things: a barometer, a thermometer, an altimeter, compass, mini diving computer, physical activity monitoring, heart rate monitor, GPS, etc. etc., dozens of functions and modes!

Let's take a look at five current Suunto models, going from complex to simple. And, accordingly, from more expensive samples to more budgetary ones (but invariably of the highest quality level!)

Suunto 9 Baro Titanium

The Suunto 9 series is the flagship in today's Finnish brand catalog. This is the no-compromise GPS watch for a variety of sports. The weight of the watch is 72 g, the comfort is of the highest level.

Suunto 9 Baro Charcoal Black Titanium

Model from the same family, at the same price, in the same materials and in the same dimensions. And even 5 grams lighter! Probably due to the strap - it is nylon here. The word Charcoal means "coal" - and indeed, the watch is made in coal black. Please note that the number of weather functions includes, like the previous model, a sound warning about a storm (according to the barometer). It is also worth noting the high-definition touchscreen. And the menu is in 19 languages altogether, including Russian. Like all Suunto 9 models, the watch runs on its own SuuntoPlus ™ operating system.

Suunto 7 Matte Black Titanium

Everything is a little simpler here, because the Suunto 7 family is slightly below the "nines". However, a not too sophisticated user will hardly notice this. Yes, it does not run on SuuntoPlus ™, but Google's Wear OS, powered by a Qualcomm® Snapdragon ™ quad-core processor. Yes, the preset sport modes are not 80+, but "only" 70+. Oh, to understand all of them ... There is also synchronization with a smartphone via Bluetooth, and support for sports communities, and GPS navigation, and an optical heart rate monitor, and almost everything else. For example:

  • activity tracking via the Google Fit app: step counter, calories burned, daily minimum heart rate, heart rate in beats per minute, activity goals - steps, calories, maximum workout efficiency, recovery time;
  • real-time backtracking, built-in offline maps, heatmaps for 15 sports, heatmaps for viewing and navigating during exercise, GPS route analysis, waypoint navigation and visual route navigation, zoom while navigating, auto zoom depending on the shape of the route

The watch supports customization of screens and backlight (brightness / mode) on a 1.39 "color touch AMOLED display with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels. There is a lock of buttons and a dial during training. And the number of menu languages is even more than that of the "nines", there are already 20. The case of the same diameter of 50 mm (and the thickness is slightly less - 15,3 mm), it is made of the same polyamide, reinforced with fiberglass, and the bezel is made of titanium , strap - fabric (microfiber, tightly fitting the wrist and allowing the skin to breathe freely).

The watch is even lighter than the previous ones, it weighs only 51,9 g when assembled. This is a slightly lower class, this glass: the “seven” has it not sapphire, but mineral (although with special hardening Gorilla Glass), and water resistance is not 100, but 50 m.

Suunto 5 Black Steel

Also GPS navigation, synchronization with a smartphone via Bluetooth, support for sports communities with the ability to update from the cloud, and everything else is in place, including the menu - here it is in 18 languages. And the same water resistance of the case (50 m), slightly less massive (46 mm with a thickness of 14,6 mm), and the main material is also polyamide, reinforced with fiberglass, only the bezel is not titanium, but steel. Accordingly, the weight; however, even here it remains very, very small - 66 g. Mineral glass, silicone strap.

Suunto 3 Pebble White Light Gold

The model seems to be lightweight in execution (of course, while maintaining the proper quality) for the sake of accessibility, but it has many functions, starting with 70 preset sport modes, Suunto app, GPS navigation and ending with a built-in cadence (cadence) sensor to measure speed and distance while running or walking. The case of a beautiful gold color is made of plastic, the bezel is made of steel, the glass is mineral, the strap is made of microfiber.

Case diameter 43 mm, water resistance 30 m. The main "specialty" of the model is activity monitoring, land sports and, of course, like all Suunto, hiking. Swimmers love it too - the watch is very light and perfectly counts pools, strokes, etc.)
