Introducing Seiko King Turtle and King Samurai Save The Ocean

Wrist Watch

The Save The Ocean concept is not new to Seiko. She has spawned many special versions of the models that are the base for the brand, such as the Samurai or the Turtle. This work, which Seiko is partnering with his grandson Jacques-Yves Cousteau, is making a significant contribution to preserving the ecology of Earth's oceans. This year, the brand has once again returned to this topic and introduced the new King Turtle and King Samurai models.

The Save The Ocean series is based on a collaboration that emerged in 2018 when the brand teamed up with Fabienne Cousteau, ocean explorer, ecologist, and grandson of the renowned Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Like his grandfather, Fabienne Cousteau devoted his life to the study of the oceans and activities aimed at preserving their ecology. Seiko is funding the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center, a non-profit educational foundation. Following the first models released in 2018 and the “watch trilogy” of 2019, the Japanese brand has now presented new models.

The new Save The Ocean is based on two versions of the famous King series. In fact, these are modernized versions of two of Seiko's bestsellers - Turtle and Samurai. The main idea of the modernization is to achieve greater resistance to aggressive environments through the use of appropriate materials. At the same time, the attractive design of both models has been preserved; the only exception was the appearance of the dial, kept in gray-blue tones (Seiko has been intensively practicing it in recent years) and decorated with images of stingrays, as well as a silicone strap.

King turtle save the ocean

As already noted, the King series became the base for the new products in 2021. The first of them has retained the main features of the vintage King Turtle model, with its crown at 4 o'clock and a polished-satin case, which, with a diameter of 45 mm, is not at all bulky on the hand. Changes include a sapphire crystal with a lens above the date and day of the week, and an updated bezel with even more pronounced grooves and a black ceramic bezel. The watch is powered by the automatic caliber 4R36, which has proven its absolute reliability in countless Seiko models.

But the main innovation was the dial, made in a gradient gray-blue color and decorated with the silhouettes of two mantas (these giant sea rays are traditionally considered symbols of the struggle for the ecology of seas and oceans).

So, the basic data:

  • stainless steel case, 45mm by 13,2mm, satin-brushed and polished
  • screw-down crown
  • sapphire crystal with a lens above the date and day of the week
  • water resistance 200 m
  • unidirectional bezel with ceramic bezel
  • automatic caliber 4R36 (24 jewels, 21 vibrations per hour, power reserve 600 hours)
  • blue silicone strap

King samurai save the ocean

The origin of the second novelty of 2021 is similar, it is a special version of the King Samurai model. The principle is the same: the design of one of the most popular Seiko cases is taken as a basis, the dimensions (43,8 x 12,8 mm) are preserved, the same x-shaped hands, the same mechanism, and the changes concern primarily materials that are more resistant to almost all hazards ... We also note a sapphire crystal with a lens over the date aperture and a digitized bezel with a ceramic bezel. The watch runs on an automatic caliber 4R35 - almost the same as that of the Turtle, but without the day of the week.

The rest is also the same: a gray-blue gradient dial, mantas silhouettes, a blue silicone strap that echoes the dial.

Basic data:

  • stainless steel case, 43,8mm by 12,8mm, satin-brushed and polished
  • screw-down crown
  • sapphire crystal with a lens above the date
  • water resistance 200 m
  • unidirectional bezel with ceramic bezel
  • automatic caliber 4R35 (23 jewels, 21 vibrations per hour, power reserve 600 hours)
  • blue silicone strap.
