What do the inscriptions on the watch mean?

Wrist Watch

The inscriptions can be easily divided into those that are understandable to any person who speaks English, and others. And this is the wrong way. Often, a simple phrase or words have more meaning than a literal translation. Better use our

BRIEF GLOSSARY FOR THE OWNER AND BUYER OF THE WATCH

Alarm - Alarm clock

Anti-magnetic - The watch does not experience harmful effects of magnetic fields, from which the main components of the movement, balance-coil and mainspring are protected.

anti shock - In your watch, the shock-absorbing system protects the balance axis - the part of the movement that is most sensitive to mechanical shocks.

automatically - Watches with an automatic winding system - it is carried out when the hand moves. The main advantage of self-winding mechanical watches is that they do not have to be wound daily. ATTENTION: a watch not worn on a hand, lying on a stationary surface, will stop, and a manual winding system is not always provided in such watches.

Autoquartz (Kinetic) - The battery of a quartz watch is recharged by moving your hand.

Chemistry - The clock strikes every 15 and 30 minutes, as well as every hour.

chronometer - The watch has been officially tested in an independent research center, certified (a certificate must be included in the kit).

Co-axial - The caliber (movement) of your watch is based on the co-axial escapement, which was introduced in 1999 and became the basis of the first completely original movement in 250 years. The coaxial escapement increases impact resistance and eliminates the possibility of travel disturbance caused by touching the balance spring.

Diver's XXXX M - Watch for a diver. Water resistant, high pressure guaranteed, brightly lit hands, unidirectional rotating bezel (see our bezel article) and durable bracelet or strap attachment.

Equation of Time - The equation of time, or the true length of the day at different times of the year. Well, the difference between the local average time shown by the regular clock and the real solar time. When assessing this difference, the daytime and summer time shifts and the distance from the longitude of the corresponding time zone should be taken into account (for Moscow, this is 45th degree of east longitude). Real solar time is determined by the moments when the Sun passes through certain points in the sky, for example, through the highest point of the Sun's orbit in the southern part of the sky, in general - everything is clear. The first grader will figure it out!

Flyback Chronograph - Chronograph, which allows you to restart the countdown by pressing one button. In a conventional chronograph watch, this requires pushing buttons to stop, return the hand (reset) and restart.

Geneva Seal - The inscription is awarded by the Office of the Optional Control of Watches in Geneva. The Geneva Seal or Poincon de Geneve is placed on watches produced exclusively in the Canton of Geneva, and each movement must be numbered. In all, there are 12 strict technical quality criteria that a watch must meet.

GMT (World Time) - Indicator of the second or more time zones.

Gold 14K (18K, 23K) - The case and / or bracelet are made of gold. 14K corresponds to the Russian 585th sample, 18K - 750th, 23K - 958th.

Incablock see Antishock

Hardlex - Strained glass. Properties are the same as sapphire, but much easier to scratch, even easier to split.

(NN) jewels - Stones in the movement - real precious stones (diamond, ruby, sapphire) are used to reduce friction at the points of attachment of the axles of the gear wheels. The number indicates their number. In modern watches, it has little practical value.

L-Swiss made-L - Hands glow thanks to Luminova or Superluminova luminescent coating, which needs to be illuminated to "charge".

Minute Rehearsal - Minute repeater: the clock strikes the time to the minute.

Moon phase - Moon phase indicator.

Officially certified chronometer - see Chronometer

Perpetual Calendar - Perpetual calendar (watches can be inherited).

Phase de Lune - see Moon Phase

Poincon de Geneve see Geneva Seal

Regulator - Hours, minutes and seconds are displayed on three separate watch faces. This is done to improve the accuracy of the watch.

Sapphire - The glass above the dial, the window on the back is made of scratch-resistant (and difficult to polish) crystal sapphire. Harder to scratch, easier to break completely.

Sapphlex - Double-layer glass made of a thin layer of crystalline sapphire and under it - ordinary glass. Not scratched, harder to break.

Sonnerie - see Chime

Stainless Steel - The case and / or bracelet are made of stainless steel.

Swiss Made - Your watch uses a Swiss movement, assembly and technical control were carried out in Switzerland, at least 50% of parts in watches are Swiss.

swiss movement - What it means: The movement is assembled in Switzerland, Swiss-made parts make up at least 50% of the total cost of the watch. Well, where the case is made and whether it reliably protects the Swiss caliber - see for yourself.

Swiss mov't, swiss quartz - Watches with a Swiss company mechanism released at their foreign (made in China! This is what I was afraid of!) Factories.

T-Swiss made-T - The luminous elements of the watch are made on the basis of tritium isotope. It does not require backlighting to "refuel" the luminous element, but after about 10 years the arrows stop glowing.

Whirlwind - Tourbillon (fr. "Whirlwind") invention of Abraham Louis Breguet. His idea from 1795 was embodied in 1801 in a patented design in which the balance regulator was located on a special platform rotating at a speed of one revolution per minute. This platform rotated in axles and became known as a carriage. Significantly increases the accuracy and originality of the appearance (the tourbillon is often used instead of the seconds hand). An elegant thing!

WR..(m)(Bar)

Water Resistance - The numbers after WR indicate the degree of water resistance. 30WR - it is possible not to remove when washing hands, 50WR - swimming is allowed, 100 WR - diving without scuba gear, 200 WR - suitable for diving.

"To Ivan Ivanovich on his 50th birthday from colleagues in ..." - Such inscriptions are valued as a memory, but they do not leave an opportunity to donate or sell unnecessary average quality watches. They are often the reason for the formation of watch collections.
