Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Green Dial: durable, lightweight and stylish

Wrist Watch

The Japanese watch company Citizen has pleased its many fans with yet another replenishment of the Promaster diving collection: we meet the Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Green Dial, ref. NY0100-50X.

The history of Citizen's professional diving watch goes back to 1982, when the company released the Professional Diver model with impressive water resistance - up to 1300 meters! And even then, titanium was used as a case material: a very logical choice, because diving instruments require high strength, and titanium provides it with a much lower weight than the usual steel. In 1989, the Citizen Promaster collection premiered, also in titanium, now (32 years later) including many “descendants” of its “progenitor”. The Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Green Dial is the youngest of these “descendants”, and it is distinguished both by its inherent reliability, durability, ergonomics and functionality, and by its impressive design.

But perhaps the main innovation in the NY0100-50X is the use of proprietary Super Titanium ™ technology, which combines the choice of titanium as a base material and its Duratect coating, also developed by Citizen. One of the few disadvantages of titanium as such is its poor scratch resistance, and the Duratect coating has eliminated this disadvantage. As a result, Super Titanium ™ material is 60% lighter than stainless steel (with equal strength), its surface is five times harder, the alloy is hypoallergenic and, of course, resistant to corrosion. Fact of note: Citizen Super Titanium ™ technology is officially participating in the Japanese space program, including lunar exploration!

So, the case of the new Promaster watch, waterproof up to 200 m, is made in this innovative high-tech metal. The case diameter is convenient - 42 mm, and in general, wearing the new item is very comfortable. It is worth paying attention to the location of the crown: it is on the left side, like the aforementioned very first Professional Diver 1300m, only it has moved from “9 o'clock” to “8”. This left-handed arrangement is a tribute to the “professionalism” of the watch as an underwater instrument: the diver's left wrist is usually occupied by other specific devices, therefore the right wrist is intended for the watch.

Describing the case, we also mention the unidirectional bezel with a 60-minute mark, which is mandatory for diving watches. And let's add that it (the bezel), the case back, and the bracelet with a folding clasp and length adjustment are made of "super titanium". As a result, a watch for a diver is incredibly light, weighing only 110 g.

As for the design, apart from the already noted location of the crown at 8 o'clock, let us, of course, pay attention to the dial. Green is trending now, and the gradient finish of the new Promaster's dial is particularly eye-catching. And, of course, all the features set by the international diving standard ISO 6425 are available, including excellent readability, including in the dark, thanks to the effective luminescence of massive hands (the outlines of the minute and second are highlighted in red) and large overhead markers, as well as clear indication in date and day of the week windows at 3 o'clock. True, we are not sure of the special need for calendar indicators for a pronounced "diver", but we will not attribute their presence to disadvantages. The only thing that is a little pity is that the glass is not sapphire, but mineral ...

And finally, about the mechanism. Model Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Green Dial, ref. NY0100-50X, powered by a 3-hertz automatic Citizen 8203 caliber with a 40-hour power reserve and a claimed accuracy of ± 20 sec. per day.

The price of a watch with such undoubted advantages is very interesting - around 700 euros.
